"Die Tölzer gehören zu den besten Knabenchören der Welt. Ungeheuer klangschön reagieren sie auf die subtilsten Zeichen Chaillys."
LEIPZIGER VOLKSZEITUNG, 4.4.2009 (Peter Korfmacher)
"The presence of the fabulous Tölz Boys Choir gave added lustre. This was choral singing with everything: polished phrasing, in lines such as 'Ich bin's, ich sollte büssen,' a deep sense of reverence in 'Erkenne mich, mein Hüter,' dramatic excitement in 'Sind Blitze, sind Donner' and most of all, a tremendous sense of the crucial import of the glorious 'Wahrlich, dieser ist Gottes Sohn gewesen.' The performance received a standing ovation, and rightly so."
MUSIC OMH, 5.4.2009 (Melanie Eskenazi)
"But what raised the evening from merely excellent to electrifying were the choirs. Chailly had brought over two boys’ choirs – the Tölz Boys Choir from Munich and the orchestra’s cantata colleagues, the St Thomas’s Boys Choir from Leipzig. I wasn’t sure this would work... And would boys have sufficient experience to convey the work’s spiritual dimension?
But doubts were swept away when they began to sing. Their accuracy and discipline would put many grown-up choirs to shame, for a start. They had power and attack, too – several of their dramatic interjections, sometimes bouncing from one side of the stage to the other, raised hairs on the back of my neck. And the purity of sound, with its aura of innocence, was perfectly suited to this meditation on sin and redemption."
THE TELEGRAPH, 6.4.2009 (Paul Gent)
"First to startle was the double-chorus, the St. Thomas's Boys Choir and the Tolz Boys Choir, whose sensational presence, power and precision made something entirely new of the opening chorale-fantasia. The open-throated clarity of this singing, its subtlety and nuance, is something I've rarely heard equalled. ... So, an extraordinary performance."
THE INDEPENDENT, 13.4.2009 (Edward Seckerson)
"The choirs, both utterly sensational"
THE GUARDIAN, 10.4.2009 (Tim Ashley)
